HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Storms appear to be impacting fireworks shows in Hampton Roads, with Suffolk making the call to cancel its fireworks show as another show in Newport News could be impacted. Suffolk said in a social media post that "we are sad to announce that our fireworks show is canceled tonight due to the impending weather. Thank you to everyone that made it out to Constant's Wharf Park and Marina." Due to an impending stormfront, the city of Newport News is asking those attending its Stars in the Sky July 4 event to seek shelter immediately. In an updated post just before 8 p.m., it said "event attendees are encouraged to continue seeking shelter. We will have an update shortly regarding the status of the fireworks show. Thank you for your patience." Weather radar as of 7:41 p.m. Thursday, July 4. It noted that there is lightning within five miles and there is the potential for strong winds. The city is monitoring the weather and will provide updates regarding the fireworks show. No decision has been made on whether to hold the fireworks show, but it has paused trolley service for the event due to the weather. Super Doppler 10 meteorologist Ricky Matthews said that wind and some rain were moving down the Peninsula just before 7 p.m., and that it would bring outflow winds of 30 knots and rough seas for boaters as it moves southeast.
