COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) - Search and rescue crews spent a second day on Thursday scouring Malletts Bay for a missing man in what officials are now calling a recovery mission. Colchester Technical Rescue, Colchester Police, and Vermont State Police dive teams were out on the water early. Police say Cory Lavallee, 37, and his two children were on an inflatable boat with a small electric motor Wednesday when Lavallee jumped into the water after one of his children became distressed. They say he got her back into the boat but then went under the water. Police say a bystander located the children in the inflatable boat and took them to shore in a sailboat. Authorities say providing closure for the family is important.“They need some closure. We do everything we can to give them that opportunity. It’s been our experience over the years that sometimes this takes three or four days to resolve... Depending on how deep the water is, the temperature of the water, and the conditions,” Colchester Police Chief Peter Hull said. The chief said search crews battled strong winds on Wednesday, and increased boat traffic on the lake had an impact on search efforts Thursday.Just before 4 p.m. Thursday, state police said the search was wrapping up for the day. They planned to resume the search on Friday.
