WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- There have been dozens of presidents of the United States since George Washington became the first to hold the office. Those people have come from many different backgrounds and from locations across the country. Virginia often boasts that it has been home to more presidents than any other state, but only one person who became president was born on July 4, and he wasn't from Virginia. It was President Calvin Coolidge. How Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as president by his father Coolidge, who served as the 30th president, took the oath of office after the sudden death of Warren G. Harding in 1923. He was born in Plymouth, Vt., on July 4, 1872. According to his biographical information from the White House Historical Association, which appears on the White House's website, Coolidge was the son of a village storekeeper. He graduated from Amherst College with honors and went into law and politics in Massachusetts. Coolidge climbed the political ladder from councilman in Northampton, Mass. to Governor of Massachusetts as a Republican. Which president died on July 4th? There was more than one. Not known for doing a lot of talking, Coolidge gained the nickname "Silent Cal." Coolidge's time in the Oval Office ended in 1929.
