SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Have the Fourth of July off and nowhere to go? Local site "Hidden San Diego" has some unique ideas for enjoying the holiday away from the crowds. Jessica Johnson, the author behind "Hidden San Diego," shared with FOX 5/KUSI uncommon ways to celebrate Independence Day locally, yet not at busy beaches or in the jam-packed downtown metro area. Take a drive up to Palomar Mountain This mountain ridge is located in northern San Diego County. From Highway 76, take Rincon Springs, otherwise known as County Road S6, for a scenic route to the top of the mountain. While traveling on the steep and winding road, Johnson said all the mountain overlooks provide views of fireworks shows from all the towns below. "This is a fantastic idea if you don't like to hear the loud 'boom' or like if you have PTSD, maybe your dog gets freaked out by it, because you're not going to hear the sound," she explained. "But you'll just see this whole show from above." RELATED: Keeping service members in mind this holiday by recognizing PTSD triggers The "Hidden San Diego" author also pointed to the beautiful landscape in the mountain range, which could make for a great sunset view ahead of the ignition of fireworks in surrounding communities. In her experience, Johnson said she's previously been able to see up to six different fireworks shows from this historic city park area. "You know, there were a decent amount people there last time, but it wasn't overwhelming," said Johnson while comparing this spot to others in the region that are sure to be busy for the holiday. Have a picnic and hike at Felicita Park Once an old Native American Village, this Escondido park has 53 acres of dense oak groves, as well as numerous hiking and nature trails. As explained by Johnson, it tends to be a little more private than some other parks in the county. "It has, you know, the regular picnic benches and playground, and all that fun stuff. It also has a deep forest and a creek that runs through with dams and waters," she explained." It's shaded...it's so lush and unique." With a heat an excessive heat warning in place for parts of the county, retreating to this shady space may be a great alternative to other outdoor activities on the Fourth of July. (Courtesy of County of San Diego Parks and Recreation) Visit a local watering hole For those who wish to cool off in some water without having to face the crowds at local beaches, Johnson suggests visiting one of these local spots: -- Green Valley Falls: Located in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, the waterfall is typically seasonal, but Johnson said there are usually several watering holes that trail down the hiking path. -- Santa Margarita River Trail Preserve: This trial can be found in the northernmost end of the county in the rural community of Fallbrook. As explained by the "Hidden San Diego" author, it's the only river in the region that you can safely walk through and hang out in.
