BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A man is dead after he was allegedly electrocuted on a privately-owned dock on Smith Mountain Lake, according to ABC 13 News. In the early morning of Thursday, July 4, Bedford County's emergency call center received a report of a possible drowning at Smith Mountain Lake. When responders arrived at the scene, they were told by friends and family that a man was in distress in the water, after which two of them jumped in to help and immediately felt as if they were shocked by electricity. According to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, the man was able to be taken out of the water, where CPR was performed before emergency responders arrived. The man was then taken to the hospital, where the sheriff's office said he was pronounced dead. The two other individuals had minor, non-life-threatening injuries from the incident. Officials say the man was visiting from out of state with friends and family. ABC 13 News reports that an officials confirmed that the death was due to an electrocution caused by stray voltage from boat lifts in the water. The news outlet also reports that the dock is privately owned by a homeowner. The sheriff's office will continue to investigate the incident.
