APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - For Darian Bricker and her daughter Zoey, everything about the Appleton fireworks show on Wednesday night was new and exciting. "I wanted a new adventure, meet new people, try new things, see new fireworks and this is honestly really beautiful," said Bricker. They are from Green Bay but decided to check out Appleton's fireworks show for the first time this year. They arrived about four hours before the first fireworks lit up the sky passing the time by enjoying the beauty of Memorial Park, petting dogs, and playing in the park. There's no live music or food or drinks for sale although Local 5 News did see some food trucks on the outskirts of the park. Longtime organizers of the Appleton Area Jaycees recently announced they no longer could run the event and the city of Appleton has taken over. For now, city officials decided to have a scaled-down version of their Independence Day celebration. But from fishing, to playing catch, to playing at the park it seems like people aren't having too much trouble entertaining themselves. "I just found that out when I got here but honestly still having fun even though there's no live bands or food," said Owen from Shawano who told Local 5 News he's been coming to Appleton for the fireworks for about five years now. Something that Zoey says is her favorite part of the 4th of July holiday. "Everybody smiles," she said. Another thing that made Zoey smile was the actual fireworks show which is one part of the celebration that wasn't scaled back this year.
