FAIRPORT, N.Y. (WROC) -- We all wish we had the creative solutions to solve the world’s problems. Odyssey of the Mind challenges our youngest innovators to do just that, and not one but two local teams proved their skills to compete on this year’s world stage. "I’m really happy for all our team. I’m so proud of the work we’ve done, and I also think that we did a really good job," says Brooks Hill Elementary student Ellen Keck. A touch of theater, a dash of engineering, and a heaping portion of problem solving — the annual Odyssey of the Mind competition sets up several scenarios for teams to work around. The group from Brooks Hill worked meticulously on their sets, script, and scenario solution to win first place at regionals, moving up to second in New York State! "It felt very exhilarating, because we hadn’t been called for third or fourth, and we knew the only possibilities after that we get first or second or not place at all," explains Dominick Caminiti. "So it was very, very exciting!" And off they flew to their first shot at the world competition—this year in Iowa. Right by the sides—the Fairport High School team, some of whom had been to worlds before during their own elementary days. This group created an all new solution to their scenario at every level of the competition and placed every step of the way. Their team’s seniors now move on to college with a firm grasp of their talents to overcome challenges. "One of the main elements is teamwork, and that’s always going to be useful for whatever career you go into, and just being creative and knowing how to problem solve, I’m able to think quickly on my feet and really face any world problem that comes my way," says recent graduate Veronica Talma. "It’s life-changing, and it gives you lots more life skills that stay with you for your whole entire life. It has taught me so much, and it’s just so much fun meeting new friends and getting to go new places," adds Dominick. Both teams not satisfied to rest on their laurels as they say they already have a game plan to make it back to the world stage again in 2025.
