OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Fireworks displays in Oceanside have wrapped up all in commemoration of the city’s birthday while also kicking off the July Fourth holiday. Authorities took the celebratory occasion to also urge celebrators to leave fireworks to the professionals.  Oceanside is leaving the light shows to the pros, honoring the United States the safe way. “I like the fireworks because they’re like a rocket ship that goes up in the air and kind of explodes into a firework,” said a young Oceanside resident. Yet, every year, there are amateurs who take a crack at lighting up the sky themselves, an illegal activity in San Diego County. “Sometimes my friends bring down fireworks from Arizona even though it’s illegal,” a teenager admitted. But they may want to think twice this Fourth of July. Just last year, five fires were started in the county during the holiday. Video: Suspects wanted in Pacific Beach boardwalk attack “They’re not only very flammable and very dangerous in terms of wildland fire, but also in terms of hurting yourself,” said Brent, a local authority. Now, those who catch the act have an easy way to report it. There’s an app called Nail ‘Em - and it might catch you. “You can definitely face a fine and some jail time, so it’s just not worth it,” Brent added. Here’s how it works: the app lets users file a complaint, which is then immediately sent to nearby police or fire departments, helping not only Oceanside PD but all of San Diego County, placing the power of enforcement in the palm of a hand. “Dispatch is the one who receives the information. They’re the ones who give the information to the cops and then respond to those calls for service,” said Sgt. Javar Beaver of the Oceanside Police Department. “We get firework calls every minute.” Some of which can have harmful consequences. “I used to know this one kid, he blew off his hand at the skatepark,” recalled a local resident. Our crews covered the incident back in 2021 when a 14-year-old in Vista was sent to the hospital after a firework exploded in his hand. That’s why officials stress to sit back, relax and enjoy watching those sparks fly legally.
