FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The Basin Fire has grown to 13,926 acres, with 26% containment. Those on the front lines are doing all they can to ensure they stay safe and cool as the Central Valley experiences a heat wave. These Basin firefighters have been climbing steep terrain and will be facing triple-digit heat for the next 10 days. Extra hydration, communication, and medical plans in place are key to preventing overexertion. “You're working against gravity, you're working against the heat, and your own personal fatigue," said Mike Lindbery, Public Information Officer of the Basin Fire. "So that makes it really tough, it's a very difficult job.” Tuesday three firefighters were removed from the line due to the extreme heat. “The entire team takes the safety of the crew as our number one priority,” said Erik Nelson, Medical Unit Leader, California Inter-agency Incident Management Team 11. Nelson says the firefighters need to recognize the signs that their body is overheating. “They're going to start feeling tired, they're going to start profusely sweating, if an individual starts to feel dizzy, lightheaded, weak.” If a firefighter feels these symptoms, they will be withdrawn from their workload to cool off before it turns into something dangerous. “If it does progress to that, then we have ways to extract them off the fire line and provide emergency medical care to them,” Nelson said. Not to mention, they're doing these high-intensity tasks in full gear. “Long-sleeved shirts, long sleeve pants, helmets, that's kind of boxing that heat in, in additional, they're wearing line gear that can weigh anywhere between 30 to 60 pounds,” Nelson said. Whether they are fighting a fire or not, they advise everyone to stay inside as much as they can while we ride the heat wave.
