Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports The Spurs might be taking a look at the star wing, now that his market value seems low. Free agency has quieted down, as most of the big names have agreed to deals. The only star out there is DeMar DeRozan, who has faced a dry market for his talents. A few teams have been rumored to be interested in him, and now we can add the Spurs to the list, according to The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson. Kings have talked to Bulls about DeRozan sign and trade, per source. Spurs also now another possibility. Despite DeRozan interest in Miami, Heat not in position to give him what he's seeking at this time... Heat will hope opportunity on some player it wants arises this summer.— Barry Jackson (@flasportsbuzz) July 4, 2024 You might be wondering who Barry Jackson is and whether should be trusted. He’s a veteran reporter from the South Florida area who’s been known to have sources within the Heat’s organization, so his information can’t be dismissed outright even if he’s not a habitual newsbreaker in the NBA. Let’s take a closer look at the rumor. Why it makes sense The Spurs are one of the few teams out there with money to offer, whether they operate below or above the cap. They have a past with DeRozan and added a veteran already in Chris Paul, so they might be more interested in winning now than previously assumed. DeRozan would provide a more reliable scoring option in the perimeter to complement Victor Wembanyama inside and could take over in the clutch, when it can be hard to get the ball to Wemby. Paul and DeRozan would be two great mentors for Stephon Castle and DeRozan shouldn’t be particularly expensive or picky now that most teams can only offer him the mid-level exception. Even if the fit isn’t ideal, talent is talent and DeRozan could potentially be flipped later. Why it doesn’t make sense Aside from adding some shot creation and Pop having a good relationship with DeRozan, not much else makes sense about a potential reunion. DeRozan can’t shoot, which makes him a terrible fit in the starting lineup next to Jeremy Sochan, and he can’t defend, so he can’t replace Sochan as a starter. He’s still reportedly holding out for a big contract so signing him outright seems unlikely, and by the rules, sign-and-trade contracts have to be for more than one year, which would interfere with San Antonio’s rumored plans of having as much cap space as possible in 2025. The fit on the court is bad, a deal that makes sense for both parties would be tough to iron out and DeRozan is probably looking to play for a better team than the young Spurs. A reunion between the Spurs and DeRozan seems unlikely. Reports suggest DeRozan considers himself a star and wants to be paid as one, which means he probably won’t give San Antonio a discount. The front office has said time and time again that they won’t skip steps, and bringing in DeMar on a multi-year contract would go against those claims. And the fit is just too bad on the court for either DeRozan or the Spurs to convince themselves that this a pairing that would work well long-term. It’s still something to keep an eye on. Even if the Spurs are just doing their due diligence for now, things could change later on if DeRozan can’t find a team and San Antonio decides it wants more shot creation, even if it comes at the expense of spacing.
