Authorities on Wednesday publicly identified an inmate who died last week after suffering an apparent medical emergency at San Diego Central Jail. Deputies responded to a report that 42-year-old Richard Woodford had collapsed at the jail. They found him unconscious and unresponsive on the floor of a shower room about 6:30 p.m. June 26, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Despite lifesaving attempts by medical staffers and paramedics, Woodford died prior to being transported to a hospital. “At this time, the cause and manner of death has not been determined by the (county) Medical Examiner’s Office,” sheriff’s Lt. Michael Krugh said Tuesday. Woodford, who was homeless, had been arrested a day prior in Santee on a misdemeanor warrant charging him with intent to defraud, as well as possession of a controlled substance and illicit drug paraphernalia.
