FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Staying calm and informed in the event of an emergency is crucial and can sometimes mean the difference between life and death.  Fresno Unified School District's Career Technical Education Department, in collaboration with the Fresno County Office of Emergency Services, hosted an educational event for students interested in the healthcare field.  The event provided scenario-based demonstrations with community partners like Community Regional Medical Center and other public service organizations. "Like right now we're actually working on going to do internships. They are unpaid, but it's good to get the experience and volunteer." Angelica is interested in helping patients and wants all the experience she can get.  "I am definitely interested in the medical field," she said. "I am pushing more towards doctor, maybe, family medicine." She was one of the hundreds of students at the Disaster Preparedness Event that was held at the Fresno Fairgrounds.  "We're projecting about 150 students coming in from all the different high schools in Fresno Unified," said Krishnna Reyes. Reyes serves as the Career Technical Education for Fresno Unified. "They can explore careers in both industries so that the students can have straight information from the people that do this on a daily basis," he said.  Jason Kruggel is the manager of emergency preparedness at Community Regional Medical Center.  "This event gets them out of the traditional classroom to see what we would be doing in a real-life scenario," Kruggel said. "We also brought our MDs as well to show again the different types of roles they can go into to support a certain service, as in burn or trauma as well." By the time they complete the Medical Pathways program, students like Angelica will be both CPR and Stop the Bleed Certified, and attending events like the Disaster Preparedness event helps them to gain some valuable experience in the field they are interested in.
