SOCORRO, N.M. (KRQE) – The U.S. Forest Service says lightning has sparked a new fire west of Socorro. The fire, called the Fisher Fire, was reported July 1, 2024. Fire crews were initially delayed due to weather issues, the Forest Service says. July 3, crews were able to access the fire to begin their response. Fire details Start Date: July 1, 2024 Location: Remote mountainous terrain of northwest San Mateo Mts. on the Magdalena Ranger District – New Mexico on the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands Fire Size: 0.1 acres Contained: 0% Structures Burned: The Fisher Fire is not a threat to any values at risk or communities, and there are no evacuations in effect. Cause of Fire Lightning Area Closures: None Vegetation: Grass, timber and brush Response: Firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service Smoke: May be visible from NM 60 southwest of Madalena, NM
