In response to the June 27 editorial “Pete Aguilar’s dull partisanship,” I feel it’s necessary to ensure your readers know the truth about the extreme Republican record on abortion. First of all, I’m proud of my bipartisan track record, having worked to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that’s putting Californians to work fixing our roads, freeways and airports, the Bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act that’s bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that’s helping reduce gun violence deaths throughout the country. When it comes to the issue of reproductive freedom, I’m not afraid to advocate as a proud Democrat because the Republican record is far outside the mainstream and dangerous for women everywhere. Your editorial failed to mention that 80 percent of House Republicans support the Life at Conception Act, which bans abortion nationwide and ends in vitro fertilization (IVF) as we know it. Republican leadership may claim that they won’t seek an abortion ban now, but the chaos and extremism of this congressional term has proven that the most extreme members are driving the agenda and they get what they want. The Speaker of the House and the leader of the Congressional Republicans is on record saying that the freedom to seek an abortion is causing “an American Holocaust.” That does not sound like the rhetoric of a man ready to give up on the Right’s decades-long quest to ban abortion. This is the same person who designed the bogus and inherently dishonest legal strategy Donald Trump used to overturn a free and fair election. He’s prepared to use any lever at his disposal to advance the MAGA agenda.  What’s most concerning about your editorial is that you’re asking the people of the Inland Empire to take the word of a convicted felon and serial liar because of some comments he made on a podcast. Donald Trump openly brags about overturning Roe v. Wade and has said that women who seek abortions should be punished. It’s imperative that your readers understand that there were many people, myself included, concerned that President Trump would pick Supreme Court justices that would overturn Roe. Many said with a straight face that these concerns were merely an exercise in partisanship, but those concerns were validated when Roe fell, and 50 years of precedent was erased by conservative ideologues on the bench. We are not going to make the same mistake twice and get complacent when something as fundamental as the ability to decide when and how to start a family, through IVF, is their next target.   Related Articles Commentary | Unelected state bureaucrats are planning to raise California’s gas taxes in secret Commentary | Ron Hart: Biden gets a cold, Trump gets immunity Commentary | Why California’s AI bill could hurt more than it helps Commentary | After Grants Pass ruling, will cities make public spaces safe for the public again? Commentary | Ron Paul: The presidential debate should be a wake-up call for Americans Your readers are too smart to fall for these attempts to downplay the GOP abortion record and the Republican campaign to rewrite history after the last two years is too little, too late. Right now, women across America are fleeing state lines to seek lifesaving abortion care. Our local Planned Parenthood saw a 250 percent increase in out-of-state patients in the first year after Roe was overturned. Doctors are worried about being jailed for performing basic health care. Children are growing up in a country with fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers. IVF clinics are being shut down. That might be dull to you but it’s a nightmare for the one in three women living under a cruel abortion ban. Make no mistake, California’s status as an oasis for reproductive freedom will end if Donald Trump wins re-election and Republicans control both chambers of Congress. A national abortion ban is on the ballot in 2024. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment and I’m proud to be in the fight to protect reproductive freedom. Pete Aguilar represents California’s 33rd congressional district.
