PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) - How will the Empire State meet its 30x30 goal? New York lawmakers originally passed the goal in 2022, calling for 30% of inland land and waters to be protected by 2030.A new report out this week from the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation shows the amount of conserved land is up to 22%. That’s up from 20% in 2020.But the report says the state still needs to acquire more than 2 million acres of land to meet its mandate.Leaders at the organization Protect the Adirondacks say this week’s report is an important step in the process.“Now we are waiting for the actual plan for how the state will do that and we expect to see that through the revision of the New York State Open Space Protection Plan, the Open Space Conservation Plan. That should be out sometime later this summer or later this fall,” said Peter Bauer, the executive director of Protect the Adirondacks. The DEC is asking for public input on the draft report within the next 60 days.
