BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) - Experts with CNBC said grocery prices are up this 4th of July holiday. Local grocery stores share tips on what to expect when at the register. “The people are buying less. They’re simply buying less," said Abouzar “Bruce” Qalandari, manager of City Town Meat Market. Although the increase in food prices has dropped by one percent, experts said the average cookout cost for 10 people is about $100. “More people are cooking and I think that’s the reason you’re seeing prices fluctuate," said Ben Castro, spokesperson for Ideal Supermarket. Qalandari said the price of chicken has nearly doubled in the last couple of months, making it cheaper to buy in bulk. “Chicken I was selling for $79.99 a case just a few months ago, 40 pounds a case. Now, I’m selling it for $150 a case. That’s almost double," said Qalandari. Despite the higher costs for poultry and produce, Castro said pork and beef are a little cheaper right now. “This is a good time to fire up that grill and have a nice selection of meat," said Castro. On the other hand, you can expect to pay less for paper products. “So if you’re looking for your aluminum foil, your plates, your cups, you can get some good prices there," said Castro. The only thing left for you to decide is whether or not it’s cheaper to cook or carry out. “Get the charcoal and heat it and prepare to celebrate," said Castro. He adds that Ideal Supermarket will have deals on certain food products throughout the weekend.
