Jason James Merritt, 60, of Cass Lake, Minnesota, formerly of Austin, died, Wednesday, June 26, 2024. Jason was born on May 3, 1964, in Austin, Minnesota to James and Diane (Hall) Merritt. He was baptized at St. Augustine Church in Austin. He was preceded in death by his Father, James Merritt. Jason graduated in 1982 from Pacelli High School in Austin, Minnesota. He was a lettered athlete in football and track and was fortunate to be a part of great teams that made it to the state tournament in both sports. Jason then went on to graduate in 1986 from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, where he played football. After his education, he spent his career in restaurant ownership, management, and operations. This took him all over the country and included such successful concepts, and Twin Cities favorites as Kona Grill, Rojo Mexican Grill and Tavern 23, to name a few. In his retirement, Jason moved to the family cabin on Leech Lake. He spent hours taking care of the property so that it was always in tip top shape for family and friends. There was not a thing he could not do, would not try, or figure out. He loved taking pontoon rides, fishing, and tearing through the woods in the six-wheeler with his brother and the family dog. Jason was invincible. He lived his life in the pursuit of perfection for himself, his family, and friends. He would give those he loved the shirt off his back and expected nothing in return. He loved his family and friends with all his heart. We pray that he is at peace and understands the depth of love, gratitude, and appreciation we all had for him. We will love and miss him always. Jason is survived by his Mother, Diane Merritt, Austin, MN; Brother, Chris Merritt, Edina, MN; Aunts and Uncles Mary Renchin, Austin, MN, Terry Grunwaldt, Austin, MN, Nancy Grunwaldt, Austin, MN, Donald Anderson, Elkton, MN, and many cousins. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 12, 2024, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Andrew Beerman officiating. The visitation will be at the church one hour before the service. Interment will immediately follow the service at Calvary Cemetery. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
