CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Hurricane Beryl has been impacting the island of Jamaica Wednesday as a Category 4 hurricane with winds over 140 mph.
Tracking the Tropics: Hurricane Beryl moves closer to Jamaica as Category 4 storm
Hurricane Beryl has officially become the earliest Category 4 and 5 hurricane in recorded history for the Caribbean. Beryl reached Category 5 status on Tuesday with winds of 165 mph but has since weakened into a strong Category 4 hurricane with winds around 140 mph.
Over the coming days Beryl will continue to push to the west and weaken. Hurricane Beryl is expected to impact the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico by Thursday evening as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane before weakening into a tropical storm as it heads into the Gulf of Mexico.
After its impact on the Yucatán Peninsula, it will turn to the northwest and that is when Texas has to watch out for impacts by Beryl for the weekend which could bring lots of rain and wind.
We expect no impacts here in western Massachusetts, but it is a sign for a busy hurricane season.
