SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WSBT) - Congress is being asked to put warning labels on social media. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram need to disclose the mental health risks to users under 18, according to the US Surgeon General. The risks run from depression to unregulated nervous systems. Social media is keeping our attention because the brain has a chemical that rewards us for doing so. Critics push back on social media warning labels “We have something called a reward pathway. Dopamine is vital in the reward pathway. So essentially when you do something that feels good, because dopamine is a feel-good hormone, you go out to dinner with your friends, you have a good social interaction, you eat a good meal, that kind of stuff will release dopamine where you feel good doing those things and you want to pursue more of those activities," said Dr. Ambreen Ghori, a psychiatrist with Bowen Center. For Dr. Ghori, social media adds a layer of distortion for those who already perceive the world as a place of judgment and ridicule. “And when someone already has depression, they have a hallmark symptom called cognitive distortion where they see the world through a negative lens. And when you have this platform that can make that worse, you're noticing more and more um issues with symptoms like depression and anxiety,” Ghori said. The brain takes 27 years to develop. During that time social media can hijack the nervous system, according to Nancy Michael, Notre Dame Director of Neuroscience and Behavior Director. “Particularly the younger the brain is that these networks are not fully developed. And so the real danger lies in, yes, kind of the habitual formation, but really in the displacement of all the other behaviors the human nervous system needs like needs and expects, to grow up in a way that their nervous system architecture and function is balanced," said Michael. Students make extreme choices in both directions, according to Michael. “There are many students that have taken steps to not play that game anymore. And there are many many many students who like don’t get enough sleep because they’re doom scrolling until like 3 a.m.,” said Michael.
