CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, Harris Teeter and Washington Fruit Growers will present a donation of 68,000 pounds of fresh apples to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. Volunteers with Washington Fruit Growers and Harris Teeter will help the food bank distribute fresh apples at one of Second Harvest’s school-based mobile pantries at Devonshire Elementary School. The donation is made possible through the success of the Washington Fruit Growers “Apples in Action” campaign hosted in Harris Teeter stores across North Carolina. Through this year’s campaign, Harris Teeter shoppers helped donate 68,000 pounds of apples through in-store purchases. Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina’s school-based mobile pantry program is designed to supplement the food bank’s Backpack Program at Title One elementary schools in the region. To help ensure children have enough nutritious food to eat and come to school prepared to learn, this program provides on-site food for low-income families. Each pantry provides staple goods, produce, meat, eggs, whole grain breads, and essential non-food items like toilet paper and diapers, on average providing 40 to 50 pounds of food per family. “Hunger relief is our top priority in giving back to the community, and we’re grateful to our trusted vendor, Washington Fruit Growers and our generous shoppers for making this donation possible,” said Danna Robinson, director of corporate affairs for Harris Teeter.
