SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Big Bay Boom will soon light up the night sky, and also bring a big boom to the San Diego economy. AAA is forecasting a record travel season for the Fourth of July holiday and San Diego is always a top destination. “Fourth of July is one of the biggest holidays, the largest holidays that we have all year,” San Diego Tourism Authority Director of Research Nathan Kelley said. Kelley said the outlook for the economic impact from 2024 Big Bay Boom is already expected to be big. “San Diego is amazing," 10-year-old Austin Urias said. He's visiting San Diego from Arizona during Independence Day for a second year in a row. Brush fire prompts evacuations in rural East County “You just look all around you and see the fireworks going off," Urias said, talking about the view of Big Bay Boom. There's a way to measure how successful the holiday is for San Diego's economy. “We look at everything from hotel data that shows us occupancy rates, how many rooms were being sold, how much revenue was coming through, what people were paying on a daily basis," Kelley said. In 2022, a study from San Diego State University estimated up to 300,000 people watched Big Bay Boom in person, which drew an economic impact of up to $90 million. “Last July we had the top occupancy rate across the entire country for our hotels, and that was actually a first, and it feels like it's going to happen again," Kelley added. Don't forget, you can watch the Big Bay Boom fireworks on FOX 5 Thursday night.
