(KSNW) -- According to the Office of the District Attorney, 25-year-old Kaylon Kirkwood of Wichita has been sentenced for killing Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office K-9 Bane in November 2023. Previously, Kirkwood pled guilty to battery against a law enforcement officer and harming or killing certain dogs. He was also sentenced to one year and a $5,000 fine for harming or killing certain dogs. Both charges are felonies. Kirkwood must pay $38,379.98 in restitution, which the DA says includes the cost of a new canine, a K-9 ballistic vest, training the new K-9, travel costs associated with the acquisition and training of the new K-9, and Bane’s necropsy and cremation. "Restitution was payable to multiple community entities because the Sheriff’s Office received donations that covered some of the items, and the restitution is payable to those who donated," said the DA. Man dead following shooting at east Wichita apartment In another case, Kirkwood was sentenced to 29 months after pleading guilty to aggravated battery with sexual motivation and seven months after pleading guilty to interference with law enforcement. He must pay $736 in restitution to the Crime Victims Compensation Fund. All counts will run consecutively. The DA says the sentences are the maximum allowed under Kansas law.
