CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - With the Fourth of July later this week, there are sure to be many firework shows. Some dogs can sleep through fireworks without a problem, but for the majority of dogs, the pops of the fireworks cause a lot of stress and make them nervous. 4th of July traffic likely to extend beyond weekend Depending on how close they are to the fireworks, the sound can physically hurt a dog's hearing as they hear at different levels compared to humans. "If you can be with them, be with them. Keep them in the house, I wouldn't let them be outside to see anything or hear anything," said Renee Foley of Feeding Hills. The American Kennel Club recommends dog owners create a safe place for your dog away from any windows such as a basement or larger closet, a place where they will feel comfortable. A sound machine may also help mask the sound of the fireworks. It is also important to keep a collar with proper identification on your pet in case they get scared and run away. And if by any chance you find yourself at fireworks with your dog, it is advised to protect their ear by either wrapping a blanket around their head and ears or putting earmuffs on to help muffle the noise.
