SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - As we make our way through election year 2024, many are focused on big government, but oftentimes it’s local leaders that make the biggest impact on everyday lives. As much as some people may want to get involved, it can be challenging for busy families to stay civically engaged. This is why officials from the city of Savannah tell us they're hosting their first-ever after-hours open house. It’s called the “We Don’t Stop at 5 O’Clock” initiative, where city leaders will make themselves available to the public for open engagement. Officials from different departments will give presentations and representatives will be placed at various booths to answer questions, listen to ideas, and address any concerns.  City administration believes increased open houses mean more residents will have opportunities to become more involved. “That's what the goal is,” says Mayor Van Johnson, “The goal is to make sure that everyone that wants an opportunity to engage with their government has the opportunity to do so.” The open house will be populated with representatives from several different departments so you can talk to them directly. There will be someone there from Information in Public Affairs, Community Services, Management Services, Water, Resources, Government Operations, Planning and Economic Development and Public Safety. The first after-hours meeting will be held tonight at 6:00 p.m. in the second floor ballroom of the Savannah Civic Center on Oglethorpe Avenue.
