Dear Editor,  Your story from June 28, 2024, “Vermont GOP votes to back Trump, waiving rule against supporting candidates convicted of felonies,” reports that the state GOP can waive this rule against convicted felons for “extenuating circumstances.” But what are those circumstances? Is the Vermont GOP ready to step up and say what circumstances justified Trump’s paying hush money to keep voters from finding out about his extramarital affairs and then falsifying business records to cover his tracks? And what about the absence of a public statement from the GOP’s top elected state official, Gov. Phil Scott, whose Facebook campaign page stresses “Putting Principle Over Politics?” Does he think this waiver is a principled decision?
