INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man will join his co-conspirator in federal prison after being found guilty of masterminding four armed robberies, including one that resulted in the slaying of a 26-year-old man. On Monday, the United States Attorney's Office Southern District of Indiana announced that 29-year-old Demetris Campbell was found guilty by a federal jury of conducting four violent robberies. Man arrested after filming rape of woman, 12-year-old During the trial, jurors listened as prosecutors presented evidence against Campbell laying out how the Indianapolis man would lure victims to meetups by making posts on online marketplaces, like OfferUp and LetGo, where he pretended he was selling an iPhone. Campbell would request the potential buyers to meet him at an apartment complex to complete the sale. But when the victims showed up, Campbell and his co-conspirators would rob the victims at gunpoint. In one of the robberies, the robbers even struck a teenager in the face with a pistol and stole a pair of Nike Air Jordan shoes off the child's feet. In another robbery, Campbell's co-conspirator, Angel Montano, pointed a gun at a woman and robbed her in front of her two children. But the robbers' crimes went further, turning deadly. On July 28, 2020, Campbell arranged a meetup with two brothers after advertising the sale of two iPhones. When the victims arrived at the meetup location near Adams and 21st Street in Indianapolis, the brothers felt uneasy about the deal and attempted to leave. Pawn shop worker told police he stole guns to pay for vacation, court docs reveal Montano ended up blocking the victims with his vehicle, however, and opened fire. One of the victims died in the shooting. The victim's brother was seriously injured. IMPD ended up tracing the usernames used on OfferUp and LetGo to Campbell. He was arrested one day after the deadly shooting. Montano was also arrested and accused of pulling the trigger in the deadly meetup. Montano was sentenced in February 2023 to 40 years in federal prison. Campbell will be sentenced at a future date.
