SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- With a days-long heat wave set to descend on much of the Bay Area this week, the National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings, heat advisories and a Red Flag Warning. With heat and fire weather dangers expected to build through the week, the warnings and advisories will be in effect for parts of the Bay Area and Central Coast beginning Tuesday. Some Bay Area customers may get power shut off due to upcoming heat wave: PG&E Most of the inland Bay Area will be under an excessive heat warning beginning late Tuesday morning through Saturday evening. Areas away from the immediate coast will be most impacted. Temperatures are expected in the upper 90s and could climb as high as 110. What is an excessive heat warning? An excessive heat warning, according to the NWS, means hot conditions that could cause "life-threatening impacts or major impacts to commerce or travel." Much of the population will be at very high risk due to the heat wave's long duration with little to no overnight relief expected. The weather service is advising that people "prepare for dangerous heat, limit outdoor activities," and "never leave people or pets in vehicles." Outdoor activities should be limited during the afternoon and evening. The NWS also advises staying hydrated and taking cooling breaks. The NWS recommends the following tips to protect yourself from the heat and sun: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. Beverages with electrolytes can also help protect against heat. Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every two hours. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing. Take regular breaks in the shade. San Francisco heat advisory The City of San Francisco has been included in a heat advisory issued by the NWS. The city will be under the advisory beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday and lasting through 7 p.m. Wednesday. Temperatures in the city are expected in the lower 80s and could reach the mid 90s, the NWS advises. Red Flag Warning A Red Flag Warning for much of the North Bay takes effect Monday night and lasts through Wednesday evening. Dry and windy conditions, with gusty northerly winds up to 25 mph and relative humidity as low as 10%, could result in critical fire weather conditions, the NWS warns. Graphic: National Weather Service Impacted regions include: North Bay interior mountains Marin and Sonoma coastal ranges East Bay hills The NWS advises not to burn outdoors as weather conditions will be conducive to rapid fire spread. Additional impacts include: Easier fire starts and rapid spread in grass and shrubbery Exercise fire safety precautions to prevent fires Have an emergency plan for if a fire starts near you The weather service also advises that you keep in touch with local officials for the most up-to-date information regarding any need for evacuation plans.
