BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The Burleigh County Sheriff's Department issued a warning of a new scam in the area. Scammers that impersonate deputies of the Burleigh County Sheriff's Department has been occurring throughout the county. Usually, scammers say that the person they're calling has a warrant and then demand money to pay the warrant via gift cards, Apple Pay, or cash app devices. Scams are growing more and more common, with the Federal Trade Commission noting that Americans are losing more money to scams than ever before. The Burleigh County Sheriff's Department advises that citizens should never heed any strange caller demanding money, especially if they are asking for gift cards as payment. The department says you should stay diligent, and if you believe you've become victim to fraudulent activity, call 701-222-6651.
