WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- Friends and family of a woman who was murdered last year are keeping her memory alive by reopening a fireworks stand that she used to run. Vanessa Crawford died on July 25, 2024. She was shot and killed in her Riverside home. The suspect is scheduled to go to trial this October. In the meantime, Crawford's family and friends are continuing a tradition that was important to her. Each year, for over a decade, Crawford ran a fireworks stand to raise money for the church and charities. "She really loved it. She loved getting out in the community and meeting people and talking," Krysal Irvin, Crawford's daughter, said. "We didn't want that to go away. We wanted to still be able to give back even though she's not here." KBI issues endangered persons advisory for a mother and her two young daughters Irvin and other family and friends are running a fireworks tent at 13th Street North and Mt. Carmel. They've placed a banner inside that reads, "This firework tent is in memory of Vanessa Ann." "One of her other friends has this quote. 'W.W.V.D. What would Vanessa do?'" Irvin said. "And so I've just said that to myself throughout this while it's hot and we're all tired. What would she do? She'd still be here. She'd probably pull out a cot and take a nap for 30 minutes and then be right back." Crawford got to know her customers, and they would seek her out. There was always a lot of talking and getting to know each other. "I think we're a lot more quiet," Irvin said. "Like normally, there's lots of conversation going, and I think it's just we all know there's a part that's missing." "People really loved my mom, and it didn't matter what she was doing. People fell in love with her, and she impacted people in ways that we probably still don't know. She impacted a lot of people."
