KHON2 (Honolulu) -- Hawaii Island police said around 4:45 a.m. Friday, June 28, a 40-year-old Hilo woman was driving on Mamalahoa Highway when she crossed the double solid while attempting to pull over onto the mauka shoulder on the opposite side of the road. Police called his mother, Kristen Castro. "I got a call and [the officer] asked me if I have a son that works at a golf course out on the Puuanahulu side, which is halfway to Kona coming from Waimea side, and if he drove an Acura," remembered Kristen Castro. "He asked if I could please come to the hospital." Police said Castro III died at the hospital around 6:30 a.m. Friday. "He was a great kid," Kristen said while crying. "He was a really special kid, he was just going to work, that's all he was trying to do was get to work. All I know is he was two minutes away from work, and as far as I know, someone's not so great decision took his life." She said her son would have turned 22 on October 4, and he was expecting his first child in October too. Hawaii Island police launched a negligent homicide investigation. Police said the other driver remains hospitalized. Castro is wrapping her head around another tragedy. "My husband passed away 67 days ago at Queen's on Oahu," she said. "He went into cardiac arrest and he just passed away." "We're kind of still in shock to have something happen like two months apart in the same year," she said. "I don't wish that upon anybody." Hawaii Island police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact police. "She [the woman driving the other vehicle] was probably looking to pull over at some place or to do something, I don't know, make a call or just to get off the road, but we still don't know what or if she was able to see the car coming or what made her abruptly turn in front of a car," explained Sgt. Thomas Koyanagi, Hawaii Island police. "So that portion we're still investigating to see what caused that."
