A Moreno Valley man, who was handcuffed and Tasered by authorities after threatening family members with a wooden rod, died shortly after being in custody, officials said Thursday, June 27. On Wednesday, June 26, deputies with the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to a call about a family disturbance at a home in the 22000 block of Country Gate Road. When deputies arrived, a woman who said she was the suspect’s mother identified him as Joseph Gloria, 46, police said in a statement. She told deputies that her son was under the influence of methamphetamine and that he had a wooden rod he was threatening her and other family with, police said. After speaking with Gloria’s mother, deputies said they determined Gloria had committed several felony offenses and would be taken into custody. Police officials said deputies tried to speak with Gloria, but he was uncooperative and refused to comply with their instructions. They attempted to negotiate a ” peaceful surrender for several minutes,” but “he aggressively advanced” toward them, police said. Deputies then used a taser to stop him from assaulting them, police said, “After a brief struggle, deputies were able to place handcuffs on Gloria and take him into custody,” officials said. Then, several minutes after being handcuffed, Gloria became unresponsive, police said, and deputies immediately gave medical aid while calling paramedics, officials said. “Paramedics arrived and continued life-saving measures, but Gloria was ultimately pronounced deceased,” police said.” The cause of death is pending autopsy results.” Officials said the names of the involved deputies would not be released and that investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office assigned to the Riverside Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail would lead the investigation into what occurred. Police are also asking anyone with information about this case to call Eric Crosson or Rick Ramirez, both Riverside County Sheriff’s Investigators, at 951–955–2777.
