CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) -- Chatham County is entering the final design phase with the Garrard Avenue Improvement Project. News 3 got answers regarding resident concerns on Garrard Avenue in Chatham County. Neighbors told us they are tired of dealing with the consequences of drivers speeding around a sharp curve. WSAV also spoke with Chatham County commissioner of District 5, Tanya Milton. She said since Monday, the county has cleaned up the knocked-over road signs caused by a recent incident and installed a radar speed sign. The county told News 3 there were four incidents at Garrard and Lane avenues since 2018, with one resulting in a death in March of 2023. Local truckers say fuel costs are cutting into their pay Chatham County said they are working on a Garrard Avenue Improvement Project, using local and federal dollars. They told us they are currently entering the final design phase which will include a realignment of the curve to reduce the radius. The project also includes a sidewalk and shared-use paths, pedestrian islands, rapid flashing beacons and a roundabout. “Engineering is recommending that we put a guard rail around the curve so if they are going to come around that curve over 50 miles per hour, they are going to hit the guard rail opposed to running into and taking down the signs,” Milton said. She said they are working toward securing federal funding. Construction for the improvement project is anticipated in 2027. "Each time we've had an incident here, it's very frustrating that we cannot get ahold of it,” Milton said.  “It's frustrating that we have drivers who do not do the speed limit, do not adhere to the speed limit.” The county said there are temporary changes that have already been made, including installing additional chevrons at the curve, so they are double indicated on each signpost, installing new edge line and centerline striping through the curve and requesting Georgia Power to install an additional streetlight.
