HARTFORD, Vt. (WCAX) - It’s that time of year again, for the Quechee Hot Air Balloon Festival.“We are going to take a ride in a balloon tonight. I always wanted to go up in a hot air balloon. I always wanted to see them,” Connecticut resident Debra Powley said.Debbie Powley drove almost four and a half hours to come to the Quechee Balloon Festival from Connecticut. She says she’s never been in one before, and since hot air balloon rides are so expensive, she thought the festival might be the perfect opportunity to fly in one.But she was bummed to find out there were none flying when she arrived.“I am nervous that we wont be able to go at six o’clock. But hopefully the wind will die down and we will be able to do it,” Powley said. This is the Hot Air Balloon Festival’s 44th year, with vendors, music, a flying dog show and skydiving. The festival expects to see about ten thousand people throughout the weekend; all the proceeds raised at the fair go to the Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce.Officials say in the last several years the weather hasn’t been on their side, and it’s been hard to get the balloons in the air.“You cannot depend on Mother Nature to have a beautiful day on any given date. We did not get to call up and make that arraignment and schedule it. So one of the things that we do is try to make sure that there is actually a festival to enjoy. No matter what the weather is,” Havah Armstrong Walther of the Quechee Balloon Festival said. There were no air balloons or air balloon pilots to be found at the festival this morning. Professional sky diver Mark Wilson says him and his team just barely made the cut because of the wind.“Actually we are right on the verge of not being able to skydive. So, this may have been our only one today. Then again we may be able to do it again. We will have to just keep watching the weather,” Mark Wilson of the Sky High Skydiving demonstration team said.Organizers say they are extending air balloon rides until Sunday if the wind dies down.
