SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- You may have an emergency preparedness kit for you or your family. But do you have one for your pet?
Having a doggy bag or cat kit made before an emergency or disaster happens can have advantages for you and your pet. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety recommends making a kit for your pets with these items:
Pet food and treats in an airtight container
Water, food, bowls and manual can opener
Collar with ID, leash, harness and tiedowns
Travel bag or sturdy carrier
Prescribed medications, for flea, tick, heartworm and first aid kit
Sanitary items like wipes, poop scoop, poop bags, potty pads, kitty litter and disinfectant
Copies of veterinary records for proof of vaccinations
Waterproof container with photos of you and your pets, should your pet get lost
Information about pet's breed, sex, color and weight
Microchip information
List of person(s) name, address, phone and email who could take your pet if you are unable to care for it
Pet's favorite bedding or toys
Grooming items
The Center for Animal Health suggests a 7-10 day supply of food and water for each pet.
