SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield School Committee met again Thursday night to discuss the next steps after they chose three finalists for the city's next superintendent. Two of the candidates work for Springfield Public Schools. The third works in Vermont. Thursday night's meeting was about looking into how the selection process will move forward since some members believe it's been unfair. They have raised issues about equity, and ensuring that all candidates are given the same treatment and asked the same questions. School committee member, Christopher Collins explained, "there was never once the anticipation that the screening committee would see all the candidates, only see the ones that met the mimum criteria it's right in the timeline, it's right on what we voted on." Another concern revolved around the inclusion of an attorney. "We've never selected the attorney, we never had a procurement process, we never had a vetting process for who was going to be the attorney that would oversee this process," said School Committee Member, Latonia Monroe Naylor. Despite the conficts, the search will move forward. It's expected that there will be reviews and background checks on the candidates in the coming days, and visits to the districts they work in. "I'd like to see what the next superintendent he or she build upon Superintenent Warwick's foundation here and what vision they have and it's important that you know we are a very diverse district. I want to keep the graudation rates moving up, keep them high, keep the drop out rate low, I want to keep orur test scores forward," said Mayor Domenic Sarno. The committee expects to choose a superintendent by May 30.
