CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) -- The campaign for Secretary of State is heating up in West Virginia. And with a crowded field, it could be very competitive in Tuesday's primary. This race has been somewhat obscured by the races for governor and U.S. Senate, but it's now getting some attention. Group of West Virginia mayors endorse Elliott for US Senate The race for Secretary of State pits longtime Putnam County Clerk Brian Wood against former Eastern Panhandle Delegate Ken Reed. Also in the race are former Delegate Doug Skaff, who was a Democrat but switched parties, and former state Republican Party Chairman Kris Warner. The office is open as current Secretary Mac Warner chose to run for governor. The Secretary of State has two main jobs: overseeing state elections and registering and licensing new businesses in West Virginia. "For a new business, LG NOVA, or anyone else, Berkshire Hathaway. To come to West Virginia, they need to know our elections are being run fair and square," said Kris Warner, (R) Candidate for WV Secretary of State. "The Secretary of State Office, and their business portal is your front door for getting your business set up in West Virginia. I got a chance to travel around the country, as you know, with Speaker Hanshaw and invite businesses to choose West Virginia. The Secretary of State's office plays a major role in that," said Doug Skaff, (R) Candidate for WV Secretary of State. "The Secretary of State has many hats, and the County Clerk has many hats, and as a County Clerk, you've got payroll bookkeeping, You've got your elections. You've got your record room. You're helping out with budgeting," said Clerk Brian Wood, (R) Candidate for WV Secretary of State. "I want to get out of the way of business. I've been dealing with the Secretary of State's Office for 25 years, so there's a lot of small things that I think could be done to help," said Ken Reed, (R) Candidate for WV Secretary of State. Whichever Republican wins the race for secretary of state, he will face off against longtime South Charleston attorney Thornton Cooper who is the Democrat in the November election. Whoever is selected as Secretary of State, will be on the state's six-member WV Board of Public Works.
