ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A day after a shooting in the middle of a high school graduation ceremony downtown, KRQE News 13 is hearing from the family of a woman who police say was shot in the neck by her step-son.  Police say the shooter, Cristian Bencomo pulled out a gun and shot his step-mother as she tried to give him a hug. The victim's sister tells us she's still shocked about what she saw happen just feet away from her.  "Somebody came up and shot my sister...right in the neck," said Angel Chester, the victim’s sister. He was graduating high school from the Southwest Secondary Learning Center Charter School with the ceremony taking place inside the Albuquerque Convention Center. "You know hearing the speeches of the valedictorian and the salutatorian and hearing about all the student's accomplishments," said Chester.  Family says Victoria was hugging her son when Victoria's stepson, Cristian Bencomo, approached. "And then when I looked back, Cristian was standing there and my sister actually tried to hug him. And he pushed her away, and then he just pulled out the gun," said Chester.  Albuquerque police say the 21-year-old, Bencomo, shot his stepmother in the neck. "After he shot her and she fell to the ground, he started stomping on her head," said Chester.  Angel says several bystanders immediately intervened holding Bencomo down until police arrived. The family says they have no idea what could sparked the brutal attack. "We're just still in complete shock that this even happened," said Chester.      As their sister and daughter recover in the hospital, the family says it's glad Bencomo was arrested and are hoping he's held accountable. "I just...I don't understand, you know I'm just scared for her and I just want her to be okay,” said Lisa Gutierrez Smith, the victim’s mother.  The family says the victim, Victoria, is in critical, but stable condition. They've also started a GoFundMe to help with medical costs. The accused shooter, Cristian Bencomo is facing multiple charges including aggravated battery and unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon.
