PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A new Providence program that will help income-eligible homeowners with multiple housing violations make free repairs to their property was announced Wednesday by Mayor Brett Smiley. The program is a collective effort between the Providence Department of Inspection and Standards (DIS) and the Providence Revolving Fund. It will be paid for by fees collected from DIS and a $3 million American Rescue Plan allocation and has already been utilized by five properties throughout Providence. The fees collected by DIS are redirected into a designated fund that is administered by the Providence Revolving Fund. In order to qualify for the program, Providence residents must meet income guidelines and own a property with code violations. The types of projects covered under the fund are those that impact safety of residents such as structural repairs, roofing, plumbing and electrical work. The program is administered to qualifying residents through five-year forgivable loans. Categories: News, Rhode Island
