CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dozens of students protested and marched on the UNC Charlotte campus in support of Palestine. Those activist called out University leaders for investments that students believe benefit Israel directly. About 50 students gathered on the campus of Tuesday night for two reasons, to show their support for Palestine, and to protest the removal of their encampment. University police showed up Tuesday morning to tear down the tents students set up in the center of campus 22 days ago. Protestors say a fellow student was arrested during the early morning camp tear down. That arrest helped ignite Tuesday night’s protest and march, which had a stop at the Chancellor’s house where police vehicles were waiting. The protestors say that arrested student was released, but then re-arrested in a campus parking garage while others marched. “He was re-arrested while we were marching,” a spokesperson for the protestors who did not want to be identified said. “He was in a parking garage, minding his business, not a part of the protest.” Students were asked to identify the person who was arrested, but they declined. The spokesperson for the protestors said others were suspended during their march with many blaming UNCC Chancellor Sharon Gaber. Several students not involved with the protest feel it’s not distracting, even with ongoing exams. Others however, were happy to see University leaders take action. One student who did not want to be identified said, “they have a right to do that, but also it’s a little scary because if there’s a lot of anger around the decision made.” The pro-Palestine students say they will continue to protest at UNCC, although next steps have not been announced by the activists. Student protestors add that several among them have been suspended, and at this time University leaders have not yet explained why this is happening. Some students believe it is an attempt to shut down their protest efforts.
