FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 News Now) -In preparation for the federal REAL ID Act enforcement starting May 7, 2025, Kentucky officials are urging residents to ensure their licenses meet the required standards for air travel, military base access, and entry into federal buildings. Governor Andy Beshear emphasized the importance of having a REAL ID or another federally accepted form of identification to avoid travel disruptions. Kentuckians can obtain REAL ID credentials in person at any Driver Licensing Regional Office operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). While state-issued REAL ID credentials are the primary option, other acceptable forms of ID include passports, passport cards, military IDs, or Department of Defense IDs. However, it’s essential to note that a Kentucky REAL ID is not valid for international travel. Secretary Jim Gray of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet stressed the significance of obtaining the correct ID to prevent travel hiccups. REAL ID driver’s licenses can be requested regardless of renewal eligibility. Residents can renew their driver’s licenses up to six months before the expiration date. Those not within the renewal window can upgrade to a REAL ID for an additional $15, maintaining the same expiration date. While standard-issue licenses remain valid for driving and other purposes, REAL ID-compliant licenses are necessary for specific federal requirements, such as air travel and military base access. The cost for a four-year REAL ID-compliant driver’s license is $24, and $48 for an eight-year credential. To facilitate the application process, residents are encouraged to gather necessary documentation before visiting a regional office.
