HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Holyoke Police hosted a memorial service to honor two of their officers, whose names will be engraved into the DiNapoli Plaza Police Memorial. Holyoke Police Chief David Pratt to retire, Captain Cruz named interim chief Holyoke Police and family members of two fallen heroes gathered at DiNapoli Plaza to remember and honor Officer James Reynolds and Officer David Zolendziewski. Officer Reynolds was with the Holyoke Police Department for 10 years. He severely injured his spine while directing traffic and later died from spinal surgery complications in 1951. Officer Zolendziewski served the Holyoke community for 24 years and died from a motor vehicle crash while on duty. To recognize and remember these officers for their sacrifice to the community, the city plans to put their names on a memorial stone across from the Holyoke Police Department. Officer Reynold's niece, Marie Reynolds, explains what this means to her and her family, "It feels absolutely wonderful. Today is the final place for his name to be. Back in 2012, his name was put on the memorial in Washington D.C. In 2013, his name was put on the memorial in Springfield and also added to the memorial in Boston." Officer Reynolds and Officer Zolendziewski's names are scheduled to be engraved on the memorial stone next week. Craig Zolendziewski is Officer Zolendziewski's son, he says this was a great way to honor those who fell in the line of duty, "Me being able to work here, seeing it and coming in and leaving work everyday, means a lot to me. My family and I really appreciate it, we are thankful for Captain Fletcher and the entire department for making it happen." Craig told 22News that his grandfather was also an officer with the Holyoke Police Department for 32 years. He says it's good to keep the legacy going. 22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts in March 1953.
