EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- A pair of New Mexico law firms have filed a second lawsuit against the Catholic Diocese of El Paso for alleged sexual abuse of children by priests in the diocese. The lawsuit was filed in the Third Judicial District in the State of New Mexico by Davis Kelin Law Firm, LLC and Huffman Wallace & Monagle, LLC (HWM) on behalf of a then 8-year-old girl born in 1952, according to a news release sent out by the law firms. The alleged assault happened in Doña Ana County, where the woman still resides. The alleged perpetrator has been identified as Fr. Lucio Lopez, who told the plaintiff that she was “chosen by God” to obey him and fulfill his sexual needs, according to the law firms. When the alleged incident took place, Las Cruces and Southern New Mexico Catholic churches fell under the El Paso Diocese. The Las Cruces Diocese wasn't created until 1982. “The amount of priest abuse that has been documented not only in New Mexico but nationally is shocking,” said Levi Monagle, a partner with HWM and a lead litigator. “Much of this abuse happened decades ago, and we encourage people to come forward no matter how long ago the abuse happened.” “We know there are many more victims of CDEP priests in southern New Mexico,” said Zackeree Kelin, principal at Davis Kelin Law Firm LLC, and one of the lead litigators. “No matter how long ago this happened, it’s not too late.” “The bottom line is this: the Catholic Church had and continues to have a duty to hire, supervise and retain priests who will not molest, abuse and harm vulnerable parishioners,” said Ben Davis, principal at Davis Kelin Law Firm, LLC. “This is about more than the pursuit of compensation. It extends to the important work of increasing transparency, increasing child safety, and increasing checks and balances on the Catholic Church as an incredibly important institution in our society.” The law firms are asking anyone who feels they have been victimized or know people who have been victims of sexual abuse or assault to call (575) 573-8503 or go to the website. The two law firms also filed a lawsuit in the Third Judicial District in New Mexico against the El Paso Diocese and the St. Joseph Parish in Lordsburg, N.M., over alleged "sexual abuse committed by priests and bishops against young children while they were employed by the diocese," according to a news release sent out earlier this year. Some of the alleged abuse in that first lawsuit is alleged to have happened as long ago as 50 years. We have reached out to the El Paso Diocese for comment about the two lawsuits
