BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The Bakersfield Fire Department invited the public to an Open House to meet and greet first responders who make our community safe. The BFD Open House kicked off at Fire Station #1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the 2100 block of H Street. There were tons of activities for kids, including food, drinks, live demonstrations, sidewalk CPR, or the jaws of life used to extract victims from terrible car crashes. Kids and their parents lined up to practice spraying structure fires with the fire hose. ‘She started vomiting’: Concerns grow as norovirus outbreak spreads rapidly within Vineland School District BFD Battalion Chief Tim Ortiz said they haven't held a BFD open house in 7 years. "There's so much people don't realize that we do, more than just structure fires and EMS calls," said Battalion Chief Tim Ortiz. "You'll see demonstrations for hazmat, rope repelling, swift water rescue, so there's a lot of other things the Bakersfield Fire Department does." Since 1877, The Bakersfield Fire Department has served the community. Battalion Chief Ortiz said the BFD is going to have a huge 150 year celebration in 2027.
