ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Surgeons at the University of Rochester Medical Center hosted a workshop Saturday for female and minority medical students to get hands-on experience and learn surgical fundamentals.
URMC partnered with Nth Dimensions and Orthopaedic surgeons for the workshop. Nth Dimensions Program aims to foster diversity in mostly-White medical fields including dermatology and Orthopaedics.
Those at URMC said women and people of color are underrepresented in surgery on a national scale and that "mentorship and early access to role models has shown to make a huge difference in breaking down barriers."
Orthopaedic surgeon Rishi Balkissoon was the lead instructor for the workshop. Balkissoon is a former Nth Dimensions scholar who credits the program for his career.
