SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The “Gaza Solidarity” encampment at UC San Diego entered its third day on Friday, remaining calm through the night despite reports of possible intervention by university administration. About two dozen tents were set up near Geisel Library Wednesday afternoon, as well as canopies, tables and prayer mats. Those who camped out overnight told FOX 5/KUSI Friday afternoon that their plan is to stay for as long as possible or until their demands. Bodies of three missing surfers found, Baja California authorities say A press conference organized by CAIR San Diego, the Council On American-Islamic Relationsbrought various faith leaders and organizations to campus Friday. "At this moment I am here to stand in solidarity with our students in this encampment," said Imam Taha Hassane, Director Islamic Center of San Diego. "We are expecting the UCSD administration to respond to them to meet with them and to choose the right route and the right option.” The demands echo those of other camp sites that have been erected at dozens of college campuses across the country over the last few weeks, including Columbia University, University of Southern California and UC Los Angeles. Opponents of the protests, including many Jewish students and alumni, have argued that the anti-war demonstrations have veered to displays of antisemitism, instilling what they describe as a sense of fear in members of the campus community supportive of Israel — claims that the student organizers have adamantly refuted.
