VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Aimed at highlighting different cultures from around the world, the International Night Market held its first event in the ViBe District Friday night. The event is scheduled for the first Friday of each month, and for its first event, organizers put a spotlight on Latin America. The market was put on in collaboration with the city of Virginia Beach, Ricardo Romero of Jesy's Taqueria and Victor Leite, owner of Dwell Properties on 20th Street, where the event was held. "We're going to be representing Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Central America, Brazil," Leite said. "It's going to be all represented here in the food experiences." Before the event opened, he told 10 On Your Side that although the food will be great, that's not the only thing people could look forward to. "We're going to have non-food vendors bring in their art, their artisanal artifacts," he said, "We have great things for the kids. We're going to have a bouncy house, we're going to have face painting, we have a clown." He said the city needed this event. "For a while there's been a kind of hodgepodge of events put together," he said, "but never a central hub in which we can call upon our diverse community at the 757 and have them come to a place that they feel welcome, comforting, hear the music, entertainment, taste the food, have a place to collaborate with each other — businesses to be able to network together." Jessy's Taqueria was one of 10 vendors at the event. Romero said that, as one of the event organizers, he wanted to create the kind of community gatherings he remembered from growing up in Mexico City. "In Mexico City, we would close the street from one end to another and just put a DJ in the middle and it became a big, large block party," Romero said. "We want to kind of create something like that where they're going to have that flavor to give an opportunity to showcase the diversity within our community." The next International Night Market is set for June 7. Leite said they're still looking for vendors to determine what culture they'll be spotlighting that night.
