NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- A major construction project on State Road 32 is blocking up part of downtown Noblesville. Businesses in downtown Noblesville said the construction has been right outside their doors for a little more than a week. While some are already feeling the impact, they still want customers to know their businesses are still open. Indy DPW shuts down recycling site as illegal dumping continues to be a problem "It’s taken an effect, and I’m sure it’s not just us," said restaurant owner Sladan Stanisic, who owns The Nesst. "It’s all the other businesses around us." Power tools and heavy machinery can be heard along State Road 32 in the heart of downtown Noblesville and the detour signs and construction barriers make it a little tough to navigate. "There's a lot of confusion," Stanisic said. "Is it open? Is it not?" The work is all part of an INDOT project to completely revamp State Road 32. This current portion of the construction is expected to last 30 to 45 days before it moves a little further along the state roadway. "It's a needed project that has to happen, but unfortunately, it creates a hardship for our businesses," said Bob DuBois, the president and CEO of the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce. Once the current phase of construction is complete, it will move right outside other businesses like Karisma. "Fortunately, we've been busy today," said Karisma owner Kari Clouse. "But that's today. That's not every day. And the construction is going to be right out in front of us in 30 days." The City of Noblesville has more than 60 grants available for downtown businesses right now. The Noblesville Chamber of Commerce is trying to help connect owners to the $35,000 of total available funding. "During COVID, we had resilience grants that seemed to be helpful to our downtown businesses in keeping their doors open," DuBois said. "So we're applying that same model here to help mitigate these impacts." The grants are $500 to $1,000 a piece, which newer shops like Peony and Poppy said could go a long way. "We're brand new," said owner Klaudia Kirk. "So not a lot of people know about us yet. Having that grant we are able to apply for, we're very grateful for it because we're able to keep our feet on the ground and doors open." State Road 32 construction to begin Monday in Noblesville In the meantime, shops and restaurants want people to know that they are still open. "With sidewalks, you can get anywhere you want," Stanisic said. "It's just getting here that might take a little patience." There are also two large garages and still plenty of street parking, businesses said. And while the work may be a headache now, businesses also agree it will pay off in the long run. "The end result is going to be great, we know it," Stanisic said. "We just have to get there." The deadline to apply for that grant is Tuesday, May 7. After construction is done between 9th Street and 14th Street, the next phase will begin from 6th Street to 9th Street.
