Shut out for eight innings and held hitless for six of them, the Yankees’ offense came alive just in a nick of time Friday night. Giancarlo Stanton’s game-tying RBI double and Anthony Rizzo’s walk-off single capped a ninth-inning rally to give the Yankees an improbable 2-1 victory against the Detroit Tigers in the Bronx. The Yankees strung together four consecutive hits against Tigers closer Jason Foley, one of baseball’s toughest relievers, who entered with a 1.32 ERA and was a perfect nine-for-nine in save opportunities. Mired in an 0-for-14 slide, Aaron Judge kicked off the inning with a 107.5-mph single back up the middle. Alex Verdugo — the Yankees’ clean-up hitter — followed with a surprise bunt single down the third-base line. Stanton, who had struck out three times in as many at-bats, then lifted a line-drive double to right field against Foley, an extreme ground-ball pitcher. And Rizzo, with the infield in, struck a single past second baseman Andy Ibáñez’s dive to complete the comeback. “You hope something like this can ignite that fire a little bit and get the offense cranking, but it’s about winning, and these guys have done a great job of that,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. The ninth-inning heroics reversed a game in which the Yankees failed to record a hit between the third and eighth innings. Judge, Verdugo, Stanton and Rizzo were a combined 0-for-9 before their back-to-back-to-back-to-back hits. The pre-rally offensive issues had served as a continuation of this week’s four-game series in Baltimore, where the Yankees suffered three losses and totaled only six runs. “Judgey getting on, setting the tone there, is always so big for us,” Rizzo said. “With this offense, it takes one guy to get on, and you’ve just gotta keep grinding,” Rizzo said. “Winning like this, when we’re not clicking, is big. … I know it’s one game, but every game matters.” The Yankees managed only two hits through the first eight innings, with both coming against Tigers starter Reese Olson, who struck out five over five innings. Yankees starter Marcus Stroman limited Detroit to one run over 5.1 innings but was undone by control issues during his final frame of work. He needed only 64 pitches to get through five scoreless innings but lost the strike zone in the sixth and issued three consecutive walks, including one to Colt Keith with the bases loaded that gave the Tigers their only run. Stroman finished with five walks, marking the second start in a row he surrendered five bases on balls. The veteran right-hander, who signed with the Yankees in the offseason, said he lost his mechanics toward the end of Friday’s outing and planned to address the issue before his next start. With the win, the Yankees improved to 21-13. The upstart Tigers fell to 18-14. The series continues Saturday afternoon, with the Yankees’ Clarke Schmidt (2-1, 3.19 ERA) set to face Detroit’s Casey Mize (1-0, 3.08 ERA). “I know we didn’t win in Baltimore, but I think we’re playing good baseball overall in the beginning of the season,” Stroman said. “We have so much confidence in one another to get the job done, so I feel like having that mentality over the course of 162 games, I think we’re gonna be in a pretty good place.”
