NORWALK, Conn. (WPRI/AP) — Those who regularly drive through Norwalk, Conn., via I-95 will experience major delays this weekend as work continues to demolish an overpass that was damaged in a fiery crash Thursday morning. Gov. Ned Lamont expects the highway to be back open in both directions by Monday morning's commute. Until then, he's urging everyone to avoid that section of the highway. Connecticut State Police said the crash happened on I-95 South under the Fairfield Avenue bridge. Investigators believe a driver was trying to merge out of the right lane when he hit a tanker truck carrying roughly 8,500 gallons of gas. The tanker truck burst into flames on impact and completely engulfed the overpass. No one was seriously injured and the exact cause remains under investigation. Drivers are currently being diverted off of the highway and onto local streets. Traffic has been bumper-to-bumper since the crash, with the Connecticut Department of Transportation estimating travel times of nearly 90 minutes for the 16 miles from the New York border to Route 7 in Norwalk on I-95 north. AAA Northeast echoed that sentiment and provided the following suggestions for those impacted by the closure: Consider public transportation. Travelers bound for New York or Fairfield County can utilize the Metro-North commuter rail, which runs trains from New Haven to Grand Central that take approximately two hours. The parking garage next to New Haven's Union Station may be busier than usual, but travelers can go online and check capacity levels of other nearby garages before they drive. If traveling to Long Island, the ferry is an option. Two ferries traverse the Long Island Sound between Connecticut and New York: one from New London to Orient Point, Long Island, and one from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson, Long Island. Travelers are encouraged to book ahead of time. Avoid I-95 near the Norwalk exit, where the crash occurred. For driver headed to the immediate area, the Merritt Parkway, which parallels I-95 a few miles north, is an option – but it will likely be crowded with local residents trying to get around, so travelers heading to New York or other points south should consider I-84 as a recommended alternative. Understand that lengthy delays are expected. The closure will increase traffic on other highways and secondary roads, so check routes ahead of time to assess travel times and leave plenty of extra time to get to your destination. Avoid aggressive driving during traffic jams and obey speed limits on secondary roads. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Daily Roundup SIGN UP NOW
