SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – EMT students at the CTE Academy are working with first responders as they learn how to navigate different emergency scenarios. For students like Dax Briden, a day like this means a real-life look into what he hopes to someday call his career. "I'm pursuing to be a firefighter. It really encourages me to just keep pushing because it seems like such an amazing job. And so, getting the hands-on things is really showing me like, this is what they get to do every day and that's something I want to do," Senior Dax Briden said. Close Thanks for signing up! Working alongside first responders, they decided on the best course of action for each patient. More than 60 C-T-E students from other classes volunteered to play the role of injured victims. "You have a triage station that goes in and they tag all the patients. They tag them a specific color based on their symptoms that they're showing. And then after that, then they come back and they start doing treatment," CTE EMT teacher Amy Drummond said. Drummond started the event two years ago and added first responders last year. For many students, this is their first time experiencing a simulation like this one. Senior Haylee Knutson hopes to become a flight nurse someday. ‘It’s been a wild journey’: Meet Ms. Mount Rushmore 2024 "It's really interesting working with all the first responders and seeing their perspective on it as we walked through. They've kind of talked to us about little tips and tricks that they've learned," senior Haylee Knutson said. Now those first responders are passing along their knowledge to the next generation of heroes. Drummond says today's scenarios are offering additional preparation for EMT students who will take their certification exams at the end of May.
